Specialty & Heavy Item Moving Services in Chicago
Affordable City Movers is a team of Chicago specialty item movers built for the pieces a standard crew won’t touch โ safes and vaults, slate pool tables, commercial gym and fitness equipment, hot tubs, arcade machines, antiques, and artwork. As heavy item movers working throughout Chicago, Illinois and the surrounding Chicagoland suburbs, we take on weights up to 2,000+ lbs using stair-climbing and heavy-duty dollies, lifting straps, and full disassembly and reassembly. Some items never clear the doorway at all; for those we hoist, using rope and rigging through a window or over a balcony, handled by our own crew rather than a subcontractor. Based in Lincoln Park and backed by hundreds of 5-star Google reviews, we make specialty moving services in Chicago straightforward from the first phone call โ tell us what the item is and where it has to go, and we’ll build the plan around it.
Why Choose Affordable City Movers for Specialty Item Moving in Chicago?
🔩 Weight, Balance, and What Comes Apart
A 1,200-lb gun safe, a slate pool table, and a commercial squat rack fail in three different ways. The safe needs a stair-climbing dolly and a controlled descent. The pool table needs its slate lifted off in sections and re-leveled at the far end. The rack needs breaking down to its frame before it clears a doorway.
🪢 We Hoist In-House
When an item cannot come through the door, our own crew rigs and hoists it through a window or over a balcony โ no subcontractor, no waiting on a third party’s calendar. The rigging is planned during the assessment rather than improvised on the day, and we tell you upfront if a building’s layout makes it a no.
⭐ Professional Service
Our trained movers arrive on time, handle your belongings with care, and treat your space with respect from start to finish. Floor runners and door-frame protection go down before anything comes out.
💰 Transparent Pricing
No hidden fees or surprise charges. What we quote is what you pay, with stairs, floor count, and access already factored in โ there is no separate fee added on the day.
Specialty Item Moving in Chicago: What to Expect
📐 The Assessment Is the Whole Job
Before anything is quoted we need the item’s weight, its dimensions, and the tightest point on the path โ usually a stair turn or a doorway diagonal rather than the room itself. Photos help more than descriptions. A safe described as “about 500 pounds” that is actually 1,100 changes the crew, the equipment, and whether the stairs work at all.
🅿️ Getting the Truck Close Enough
On roughly 99% of our moves no permit is needed โ we park out front, in the alley, on a side street, or in a loading zone. Specialty work raises the stakes on distance, because every extra foot a 1,200-lb safe travels on a dolly is added risk. If your block is a narrow one-way with no alley, we file an enforceable CDOT permit ourselves.
🪜 Stairs and Controlled Descent
Taking a heavy item down stairs is the opposite of carrying it. We use stair-climbing dollies and a controlled descent, with the weight held from above and the crew below guiding rather than catching. Open risers, a landing too shallow to turn on, or a loose banister all change the plan, so mention them early.
🏢 Elevator Weight Limits Are Real
High-rise moves add a constraint most people never consider: freight elevators carry a posted capacity, and a safe plus a loaded dolly plus three movers can exceed it. We check the rating before scheduling, reserve the elevator window with building management, and provide a certificate of insurance at no additional charge when the building requires one.
What Specialty Item Moving Costs in Chicago
Every Specialty Item Is Quoted Individually
Weight, access, and disassembly set the price โ not the label on the item
Send us the weight and dimensions plus a few photos of the stairs and doorways, and we will quote it before the day.
💵 What Drives the Price
Three things move the number: what the item weighs, how hard it is to get out, and whether it has to come apart first. A treadmill on a ground floor is straightforward. A gun safe in a basement with a turn at the bottom of the stairs needs more crew, more equipment, and more time on site. Disassembly adds hands โ a slate pool table is really three heavy pieces plus a frame โ and a hoist adds rigging setup before anything moves. Distance across Chicago matters far less than what stands between the item and the truck.
📅 When to Book
Specialty moves are rarely tied to a lease date, so they schedule more easily than a full apartment move and midweek slots are usually open. What sets the timeline is information. We need weights, dimensions, and photos before committing a crew, and a hoist needs your building contacted first, since many condo associations require notice or prohibit balcony rigging outright. Hot tubs need draining and electrical disconnection arranged ahead of time. A few days is enough for a straightforward item; allow a week or two if rigging or building approval is involved.
Specialty Items We Move in Chicago
Our specialty moving services in Chicago cover the heavy, oversized, and fragile pieces a standard crew turns down.
🔒 Safes, Gun Safes & Vaults
Floor safes, wall safes, fireproof safes, gun safes, and vaults, routinely up to 2,000+ lbs. These are the jobs where stair-climbing equipment, controlled descent, and crew size matter most, and where an accurate weight from you changes the entire plan.
🏋️ Gym & Fitness Equipment
Treadmills, ellipticals, squat racks, cable machines, weight stacks, and full home gym setups. Most of it breaks down further than people expect, and reassembly is part of the job. Pull the weights, accessories, and water bottles before we arrive.
🎱 Pool Tables
Slate and non-slate tables. The slate comes off in sections, gets padded and carried separately, and the table is re-leveled at the destination โ a pool table that is not leveled is a pool table that plays wrong forever.
🛁 Hot Tubs & Spas
Portable and built-in hot tubs and spas up to around 800 lbs. You arrange the draining and the electrical disconnection ahead of time, and we handle the lift, the transport, and setting it precisely where it needs to sit.
🖼️ Antiques, Artwork & Arcade Machines
Grandfather clocks, armoires, china cabinets, sculpture, framed art, pinball machines, and jukeboxes. Heavy and fragile at the same time, so these get custom padding, corner protection, and crating where it is warranted. We treat the mechanism as carefully as the cabinet.
🍳 Large Appliances & Oversized Furniture
Commercial refrigerators, wine coolers, ranges, washers, dryers, sectional sofas, armoires, and entertainment centers โ the pieces that need disassembly or a genuinely creative route through a tight apartment. Doors and door frames come off when that is what it takes.
How Your Specialty Item Move Works
1. Item Assessment
We take the item’s weight, dimensions, and condition, along with the stairs, doorways, and access at both ends. Photos are welcome and usually settle questions faster. If a hoist looks likely, we raise it here rather than later.
2. Equipment & Crew
The assessment decides what specialized equipment comes on the truck โ stair-climbing and appliance dollies, lifting straps, sliders, rigging โ and how many movers are assigned. Nothing about a 1,500-lb item should be discovered in your hallway.
3. Protected Transport
Floors and walls are protected along the whole route, not just the room. The item is padded, moved out along the path we already walked, and strapped down inside the truck so nothing shifts on a Chicago pothole.
4. Placement & Setup
The item goes exactly where you want it, gets reassembled and levelled where that applies, and every pad, strap, and scrap of packing material leaves with us rather than staying in your garage.

What people ask our Chicago specialty item movers before booking a specialty move.
How much does specialty item moving cost in Chicago?
There is no flat price, because a treadmill and a 1,500-lb vault are not the same job. Cost tracks weight, access, and disassembly: heavier items and harder paths need more movers and more equipment, and a hoist adds rigging time before anything moves. Send the weight, the dimensions, and photos of the stairs and doorways, and we will quote it properly rather than guessing on the phone.
How far ahead should I book a specialty move?
Specialty jobs are not tied to lease turnover, so midweek dates are usually available on a few days’ notice. Allow a week or two if a hoist is involved, since your building or condo association may need to approve balcony or window rigging first. Hot tubs also need draining and electrical disconnection arranged before we arrive.
Where does the truck park, and do I need a permit?
Almost never. On about 99% of our moves the crew parks out front, in the alley, on a side street, or in a loading zone. With heavy items the priority is simply getting the truck as close as possible, since every extra foot on a dolly is added risk to the item and your property. On the rare narrow one-way with no alley access, we file an enforceable CDOT parking permit ourselves โ handled on our end, with nothing for you to apply for. Our guide to Chicago moving permits and truck parking has the full picture.
What if the item will not fit through the door โ can you hoist it?
Often, yes. We try the door first, since tilting, angling, and removing a door frame or banister buys more clearance than most people expect. When that genuinely will not work, our own crew can rig and hoist the item through a window or over a balcony. That takes planning: we need to see the opening, the anchor points, and what is below, and your building or association has to approve it, because some prohibit balcony rigging outright. You will hear whether a hoist is realistic during the assessment, not on moving day.
What is the heaviest item you can move?
We regularly handle items up to 2,000+ lbs, including large gun safes, commercial equipment, and stone furniture. Past that point the honest answer is that it depends less on the weight than on the route โ a 2,000-lb safe on a loading dock is easier than a 900-lb one in a basement with a tight stair turn. Send the details and we will tell you straight.
Can you move a safe down a flight of stairs?
Yes. Safes down staircases are routine work for us, using stair-climbing equipment and a controlled descent rather than raw lifting. We assess the staircase beforehand โ tread depth, landing size, banister, and what the turn at the bottom looks like โ so the descent is planned before any weight is on the stairs.
Do you disassemble and reassemble pool tables and gym equipment?
Yes, both. Slate pool tables come apart, travel as separate padded components, and are reassembled and re-levelled at the destination. Gym equipment is broken down to whatever clears the doorway and rebuilt at the other end. Hardware is labelled as it comes off so nothing is guessed at during reassembly.
Do you move specialty items in the Chicago suburbs?
Yes. We serve Chicago, Illinois and the surrounding suburbs, from Evanston and Oak Park out to Naperville, Schaumburg, and Orland Park. Suburban specialty jobs are quoted the same way as city ones, with the drive between the two addresses accounted for in the estimate rather than added on afterward.
