Why Choose Affordable City Movers for Senior Moving in Chicago?
🕰️ We Move at the Pace the Day Needs
A senior move is rarely a two-hour job with a clock running. Forty years in one house means decisions get made in the doorway, a box gets opened again, and someone needs to sit down for a minute. Our crews are briefed to expect that. Nobody is going to stand in the hall looking impatient while a family works something out.
🏥 We Deal With the Community Directly
Assisted living communities run move-ins on their own terms โ assigned windows, a service entrance, a reserved elevator, and rules about what furniture is allowed in a room. We call the move-in coordinator ourselves rather than leaving a family to relay it, and we have already done this at most of the Chicago communities you are likely to be moving into.
⭐ Professional Service
Our trained movers arrive on time, handle your belongings with care, and treat your space with respect from start to finish. Floor runners and door-frame protection go down before anything comes out.
💰 Transparent Pricing
No hidden fees or surprise charges. What we quote is what you pay, with stairs, floor count, and access already factored in โ there is no separate fee added on the day.
Senior & Assisted Living Moving in Chicago: What to Expect
📦 Downsizing Is the Hard Part, Not the Move
A three-bedroom house does not fit into a one-bedroom apartment, and the sorting is where families get stuck. Measure the new room first and work backwards from it. We can help identify what will physically fit, take donations out on the same trip, and put you in touch with estate sale services for the rest.
🅿️ Service Entrances and Assigned Windows
On roughly 99% of our moves no permit is needed โ we park out front, in the alley, on a side street, or in a loading zone. Senior communities usually simplify this further, with a service entrance and a reserved dock we book in advance. The family home is the side that needs thought: if it is a narrow one-way with no alley, we file an enforceable CDOT permit ourselves.
🎁 The Irreplaceable Things Travel Differently
Wedding china, a grandfather clock, the photo albums. These get custom padding and clear labelling, and anything going to a grandchild rather than the new apartment gets separated before loading so it does not arrive at the wrong address.
♿ The Room Gets Laid Out for Mobility
Furniture placement is a safety decision when a walker or wheelchair is involved. We leave real clearance between pieces, keep the path from bed to bathroom open, and position the recliner and the lamp where they can actually be reached.
What a Senior Move Costs in Chicago
Every Senior Move Is Quoted Individually
What is actually making the move โ not the size of the house being left
Tell us the community, the room size, and roughly what is coming, and we will quote it before the day.
💵 What Drives the Price
The number that matters is how much is actually moving, not how big the old house is. A four-bedroom in Beverly going into a one-bedroom at a senior community is often a smaller job than people brace for, because most of the house is being donated, sold, or split between family. What adds to it is the extras: a second stop to drop donations, packing help, and unpacking and setting the new room up rather than leaving boxes stacked.
📅 When to Book
Senior moves usually run on two clocks: the community’s move-in date and the closing on the house. Those are often weeks apart and known well in advance, so book as soon as the community confirms a room. The other version is the urgent one โ a fall, a hospital discharge, a bed that opens unexpectedly โ and we take those on short notice. If that is where you are, call rather than filling in the form.
Senior Moves We Handle
As one of the moving companies for seniors working across Chicago, Illinois, we cover every version of this transition โ from a first downsize to memory care.
🏥 Assisted Living Moves
The most common move we do for older adults, and the one with the most rules attached. We coordinate the window and the service entrance with the community, work inside their furniture guidelines, and have the room set up before the family leaves for the day.
🏡 Downsizing From a Family Home
Leaving the house before there is anywhere specific to be โ a smaller condo, a child’s home, or an apartment closer to family. These are the moves with the most sorting in them, and often a closing date pushing from behind.
🧠 Memory Care Moves
These need a lighter touch and closer coordination with staff. We keep the crew small and quiet, work to whatever timing the community advises, and prioritise the familiar things โ the chair, the quilt, the photographs โ so the room reads as recognisable straight away.
🌇 55+ and Independent Living Communities
Active retirement and 55-and-over communities across Chicago and the Illinois suburbs. These feel much closer to a standard apartment move, just with a building that has its own move-in procedure and usually a much better loading dock.
How Your Senior Move Works
1. Consultation & Planning
We talk through the timeline, the new room’s dimensions, and what the community will and will not allow. If several family members are involved from different cities, we keep everyone on one thread rather than repeating the plan four times.
2. Downsizing Support
We help work out what fits, label by destination so heirlooms and donations do not get mixed in with the move, and pack what needs packing. Donation loads can leave on the same day rather than waiting for a separate pickup.
3. Coordinated Move Day
We confirm the window with the community, protect floors and hallways at both ends, and load in the order things need to come off. The senior does not need to be at the old house while it is emptied unless they want to be.
4. Unpacking & Setup
Boxes get unpacked, the bed gets made, pictures go on the walls, and the furniture is arranged for clearance and comfort. The goal is a room that looks lived in on the first night, not a stack of cartons.

What families ask our Chicago senior and elderly movers before booking a move.
How much does a senior move cost in Chicago?
There is no flat rate, and the size of the house being left is a poor guide. What we are quoting is what actually makes the trip, which after downsizing is usually far less than the family expects. Packing help, a donation drop on the way, and unpacking the new room are the pieces that change the number most. Tell us the community and the room size and we will quote it properly.
How far ahead should we book a senior move?
As soon as the community confirms a room, which is usually a few weeks out. That gives time to sort properly rather than packing in a panic, and it lets us reserve the move-in window before someone else takes it. We also take short-notice moves after a hospital discharge or an unexpected opening โ call us directly if that is the situation.
Where does the truck park, and is a permit needed?
Almost never. On about 99% of our moves the crew parks out front, in the alley, on a side street, or in a loading zone. Senior communities are the easy end โ most have a dedicated service entrance and dock that we reserve when we book the window. The family home is where it occasionally matters, and on a narrow one-way with no alley we file an enforceable CDOT parking permit ourselves, with nothing for you to apply for. Our guide to Chicago moving permits and truck parking has the full picture.
Do you coordinate with the assisted living community?
Yes, and we prefer to. We contact the move-in coordinator directly about the date and time window, service entrance, elevator reservation, and any restrictions on furniture or item sizes. Families have enough to manage without relaying logistics between us and a facility. Give us the community name and a contact and we will take it from there. If the community keeps a list of approved movers or wants a certificate of insurance on file before the date, tell us early and we will get the paperwork over to them at no additional charge.
How do you help with downsizing?
We start from the new room’s measurements and work out what genuinely fits, which settles most arguments quickly. Items are labelled by destination โ new apartment, family member, donation, sale โ so nothing ends up in the wrong pile. We can take donation loads out on the same trip and put you in touch with estate sale services for what is left.
What if the senior cannot be present on move day?
That is common and completely workable. A family member directs the move, and we photograph the room as we set it up so decisions can be approved remotely. Many families prefer the senior to arrive after the room is finished rather than sit through the packing, which is often the harder part of the day emotionally.
Do you move into memory care facilities?
Yes. Memory care moves are handled with a smaller, quieter crew and closer coordination with staff on timing, since routine matters to residents. We set up the familiar items first โ the chair, the quilt, the photographs โ so the room is recognisable rather than a room full of boxes.
Do you handle long-distance senior moves?
We are a local Chicago and Illinois mover, so a move from Beverly to a community in Evanston or Naperville is squarely our job. Moving a parent from Chicago to another state is not โ that needs an interstate carrier, and we would rather tell you now than after you have booked. We are happy to point you in the right direction.
