Garages contain some of the largest and some of the smallest items in your whole home, so the packing process can be quite involved. The good news is that many garage items often aren’t used all that often, so you can start packing up your garage as early as you like – it’s best to start here and leave plenty of time so you can really do it properly. You may find that there are many items in your garage you no longer need; this is the perfect time to go through and clean out items that are just taking up space. This will not only reduce costs when you hire local movers, but also make your enormous task of unpacking much easier. • Preparation is key – as mentioned, the most important part of packing your garage is going through and organizing all the items. You’ll be amazed by how much you are able to throw away, give to friends or donate, and this will make your task of packing much easier. Separate out the items that you are not packing, the items that you are, and the items that you are leaving for your residential moving service to deal with (for example, any large or heavy items). Generally, handles are fine to be left exposed. If you have a long thin box that you can fit tools in, great! If not, they’re usually okay on their own, or you can use a milk crate or other sturdy object to stand them up in. Put all your tools together and wrap the handles in twine to keep all items in a bundle, then cover the bundle in a packing sheet.

• Disassemble patio furniture – If you have patio furniture stored in your garage, packing for a move is a good excuse to clean it up. If items can be disassembled, disassemble them. If they can be stacked, stack them. If you have chairs with seat covers or cushions, it’s a good idea to take them off and wash them before your move, just make sure they’re completely dry before you pack them in a box.

Preparing for a move can be a lot of work, but it’s also a great time to go through everything in your bedroom and have a good purge. Also, your move will be a lot easier if you start by packing the least used bedroom, such as the spare bedroom or guest room, and work from there. Below are some more tips to help you speed up your bedroom packing and help to ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible.

  • Purge, purge, purge! Do you have clothes that you haven’t worn for years? Books stacked under your bed that you secretly know you’ll never get around to reading? While it may seem easiest to throw everything in a box and deal with it when you’re unpacking, this is not the case. If you hire local movers to help you move, you will save money if you throw away unwanted items prior to the move, rather than paying for those items to be moved. Clothes and books can be donated or given to friends, and you’ll be surprised by how good it feels to de-clutter your life. If you have expensive items of clothing like dresses or coats, you can even sell them to make some extra money – either online or to second-hand clothing stores. You can also do this with unwanted books, though unless they are particularly old or rare you may not receive a lot of money for them.

 

  • Pack off-season clothes first – If you’re moving during the summertime, you can probably go ahead and pack all your heavy coats and jackets right away. When packing your clothes, it’s a good idea to wash everything first – especially jackets or dresses that may not have been washed in a while. Dry clean items where necessary. This will ensure that all your clothes smell fresh on arrival and are ready to be unpacked. Just make sure you organize the washing with plenty of time to spare before you move, as your clothes need to be thoroughly dry before you pack them. You can probably pack most of your clothes in suitcases, duffel bags or regular moving boxes, but you may want to invest in some wardrobe boxes if you have items of clothing that you would prefer to pack on hangers, such as dresses or suits that you don’t want to fold. Once the cord is secured, wrap the lamp fixture in bubble wrap and tape it to secure. Wrap lamp shades in tissue paper or bubble wrap, and place in an appropriately sized box. Lightbulbs are very delicate and will need to be carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a small box clearly marked “fragile”. Even with the upmost care, it is possible that bulbs won’t survive the move, and sometimes may be easier to discard used lightbulbs and purchase new ones for your new home.

There’s so much to pack – from large electrical appliances to tiny packets of herbs, and everything in between! What’s more, you may have fragile wine glasses, sentimental coffee mugs, expensive knife sets and other items that require special care. The most important thing to remember is not to rush anything, as it is much better to spend a little extra time making sure each of your belongings survives the journey and is in one piece when you get to your destination. Follow our advice below for packing different types of kitchen items so that your professional home movers can safely and securely transport everything to your new destination.

  • Kitchen appliances – Many people don’t keep the original packaging and boxes for their kitchen appliances. Sometimes this is a space issue, sometimes you just don’t see any reason to hold onto them. However, if you’re planning to move, packing your kitchen appliances back in their original boxes is the best way to keep them as safe as possible during the move. If you don’t have the original product boxes – never fear! All you’ll need is some bubble wrap and medium sized packing boxes. Make sure you remove any fragile components, such as mixing bowls, and ensure that appliances are completely dry before packing, with electrical cords unplugged from the appliance. If you have the instruction manual, putting it in the box with the appliance is a great way to ensure you can easily re-assemble your item once you have relocated. If you’re in a last second moving frenzy, don’t stress too much about this, as most user manuals are available online.

 

  • Pots and pans – These are relatively straightforward to pack, though they do take up a lot of space. Find a box that is large enough to fit your largest pot/pan and place others inside it. Beware that these boxes may become quite heavy – it is helpful for your home movers if you label the box as such, to avoid injury. It’s easiest to keep the lids with the pots and pans that they belong to, though if lids are made of glass they should be wrapped in bubble wrap first. To save space, pack lids upside down on the pot/pan they belong to, or on the side of the box beneath the handles. You can add extra bubble wrap or tissue paper to fill in the gaps if you are worried about excess empty space.

 

  • Silverware – Though it may be tempting to empty your silverware drawer directly into a box, this will be time consuming and frustrating to unpack. If you have a silverware holder, you can cover it with paper towel or cling wrap and then tape it closed to keep your items separate. Alternatively, you can remove them from the holder, separate each item by type (i.e. keep all the teaspoons away from the butter knives!) and secure each set with a rubber band. Depending on how much space you have, this may be more efficient than keeping items in the silverware holder itself for the move.

 

  • Ceramics – Plates, bowls and mugs are some of the most fragile kitchen items when it comes to packing for a move. Even though it seems time consuming, carefully wrapping each item in tissue paper or bubble wrap will do wonders to ensure your precious kitchen belongings arrive safely (and in one piece!) at your destination. Make sure you completely cover the item, including the handles of mugs, and ensure some bubble wrap is placed inside bowls. It’s okay to stack items, so long as each one is wrapped securely. You may want to tape the bubble wrap so it doesn’t come loose during the move. Especially if you are moving interstate or are using long distance residential movers, the careful packing of your fragile items can make all the difference. Ensure that each of the boxes containing these items is marked “fragile” – even the best home movers don’t know what’s inside your box! You may also want to line these boxes with bubble wrap to provide additional support. Of course, ensure boxes are transported in an upright position for the duration of the move.

Large items such as sofas, armchairs, TV cabinets and bookshelves are usually too heavy to consider moving on your own, but you’ll still need to ensure that all your furniture is ready to be loaded onto the truck, and has been protected adequately for the move. Below, we’ve put together some handy tips and hints for the best way to pack your living room so that your local furniture movers can be in and out in no time.

  • Sofas – In the living room, furniture poses the biggest problem when it comes to packing for a move. The best way to prepare your sofa is to separate sectionals (if possible) into their individual components. This will make it easier for furniture moving companies to fit items through doorways and onto the truck. If you do separate items, make sure you keep all hardware (such as screws, bolts etc.) together in a clearly labeled zip lock bag, and store the bag somewhere safe so that it isn’t lost during the move. The best way to prepare sofa sections for the move (and this applies to all upholstered furniture) is to shrink wrap items to protect against spills, stains or scratches during the move. Most professional furniture moving services will offer to shrink wrap your furniture for you, but you should always enquire prior to the move to ensure this is covered.

 

  • TV cabinet – If your TV cabinet has glass doors, you may wish to remove these first and wrap them in bubble wrap or tissue paper. If the doors aren’t glass, or if you can’t remove them, it’s a good idea to secure them with masking tape. Even though the doors are sealed, you should remove all items from your TV cabinet before the move. Pack items into a separate (labeled) box to ensure they remain safe during the move. Once your TV cabinet is empty, wrap it in sheets or shrink wrap to protect against scratches, dirt or dust.

 

  • Artwork/framed photographs – Photographs, artwork and mirrors are a great place to start your living room packing, as these are items you can easily live without for a few days. As a precautionary measure, you can use tape to tape an “X” across glass surfaces such as large photo frames or mirrors. If the glass does unfortunately happen to shatter during the move, it will at least be held in place by the tape. Masking tape is the best option to use as it does not result in a sticky residue being left behind on the glass. (NOTE: If you do experience stickiness once you take the tape off, you can try gently cleaning the glass with glass cleaner or rubbing alcohol). Once tape is applied, wrap items in bubble wrap or tissue paper (towels or sheets can also be used to reduce moving costs), and place in a suitably sized box for moving. You may want to put some more bubble wrap or paper inside the box to prevent fragile items from moving around or bumping against each other. Tape box closed, and mark “fragile”.

 

  • Coffee tables – Coffee and end tables are relatively straightforward to pack. Firstly, make sure that you remove all items from the drawers, and place in a labeled box. If you have several large coffee table books, remember that these are quite heavy and it may be best to split them across several boxes to reduce weight. Just make sure each box is labeled appropriately. For small coffee tables and end tables, you may want to pack them as they are. For larger coffee tables, it may take up less space on the truck if you disassemble and wrap the separate pieces individually. Make sure you store any screws or other hardware in a zip lock bag. It’s usually a good idea to keep this bag in the same box you put the contents of the drawers. Make sure you wrap each component (or each entire table) in a moving blanket or paper. If you are dealing with glass items, wrap in paper/sheets first, then use bubble wrap on the outside for additional protection.

If you have makeup items that you no longer use, throw them out. If you have medications that have expired or you don’t need, ensure that you dispose of them properly. Most local pharmacies have drop boxes where you can discard your unwanted medications.

 

  • Don’t pack items you will need during the move – if you are moving interstate or using long distance movers, you’ll want to make sure your important toiletries don’t end up on the truck!   • Clearly label all your boxes in detail (you’ll thank yourself later) – While it may seem easier to simply pack your boxes and seal them up, your unpacking will be much simpler if your boxes are thoroughly labeled. Label boxes with both the room that the items belong in, as well as a description of what’s in the box. Remember that unpacking takes around three times longer than packing, so you’ll want to save yourself as much time as possible at the other end. Some people use a number system, where they write the number on a box and then keep a separate list of what is in box number 1, 2, 3 etc., rather than writing the contents on the boxes themselves. It can also be helpful to color-code each box based on the room it belongs to.

 

  • Use small boxes for small items – Bathrooms usually contain more small items than any other room in your house. Placing small items in a large box increases the likelihood that they will get lost, and makes them harder to find when you are unpacking as they may fall to the bottom, below the larger items. Instead, use a smaller box (such as a shoebox) for your smaller items, and keep small items together. This will also prevent your smaller bathroom items from being crushed by larger objects, keeping them safer during the move and making your unpacking a breeze.
